About Memphys

Memphys makes learning Mandarin Chinese feel like looking after a little pet. Every word you learn helps your Memphys grow.

How it works

1. Snap a word. Point your camera at a cup, a cat or a chair, and Memphys shows you its name in Chinese characters and pinyin.
2. Say it. Listen to the word, follow its tones, and say it back. Memphys checks your pronunciation on your phone.
3. Write it. Trace the strokes, then write the character from memory. Memphys checks your handwriting stroke by stroke.
4. Watch your Memphys grow. Learning earns points for snacks and gifts. Feed your Memphys, level up, and watch them grow from a little beginning.

What you’ll learn

The Learn path builds Chinese the way it is made: from radicals to characters, characters to words, and words to short sentences. It has 53 connected lessons across 14 families, such as 木 → 林 → 森 → 森林 (tree, grove, forest) and 日 + 月 → 明 (sun and moon make bright). Alongside the path, more than 120 everyday objects can be discovered with the camera.

A daily quiz brings back the words you have learned a day or more later, so they stick. Each quiz is short: up to five words, speaking and writing.

Your Memphyses

Yalmi, Peppo and three more Memphyses are ready to meet you from the start. Three more join as you learn more words, share more meals and grow together. Each Memphys has their own look, moods and favorite things.

Private by design

Memphys has no account. Your progress, photos and voice practice stay on your device, and object recognition, handwriting and speaking checks run on your phone. Read the Privacy Policy for the details.
